How the Humble British Greenhouse Saved Chocolate

Published on 26th July 2018
Back in 2015, chocoholics the world over were gnashing their teeth upon hearing that the beautiful cocoa bean was under threat.  It turned out that, we were eating more of the stuff than ever before (we’re talking in generalities here, not just the Apropos office!). Additionally, new strains of disease had also been attacking the trees of the primary cocoa-producing countries. Thus, we were threatened with the very real risk that chocolate would become a thing of the past.

Luckily though, humankind fought back, with a rather unlikely weapon; the humble British greenhouse.

Somewhere in a field in Reading, British scientists got busy creating the perfect environment for cultivating cocoa. In response to the problems these plants suffered in their native habitats, scientists began looking for ways to provide the same atmospheric conditions, whilst avoiding blight of diseases seen in cocoa’s native lands.

Due to their growing conditions, the ailments that afflict the cocoa tree pose no threat to British natives. We can therefore safely quarantine plants, study them and cultivate the disease-resistant varieties, before shipping them off to their new homes. Here they can put down their roots and begin to produce the sweet, chocolaty goodness that we all know and love.  All that, thanks to the unassuming greenhouse. Thank goodness your chocolate stash is safe!

Much like the cocoa bean itself, we’ve diversified over the years. Apropos began life as a manufacturer of greenhouses; boasting the production of the world’s first aluminium-framed glazed building. Greenhouses aren’t really thought of as ‘cool’ these days…no pun intended. At Apropos though, we can give any structure a cool contemporary look. Greenhouses bring life, give nature a little helping hand, and, with any luck, could help us to save one of our most beloved foodstuffs. So we think that makes them worth saving too!

With more and more foods being recorded as at risk of extinction – coffee, bananas, even some apples are on the list – it seems to us that the greenhouse has a big part to play in agriculture’s future. Wouldn’t it be nice if we all played our parts too? You’d be surprised what a greenhouse could do for you!
