How to Make a Space Your Own!

Published on 10th October 2015
Whether you’re building, buying or extending a property one of the key things, when all is said and done, is making the space feel like home.
Making any space feel like home is all about claiming it – we’re primeval in that way. Instead of weeing on the walls to mark our territory though, us highly evolved humans do so with throw pillows and scatter cushions, clean lines or cluttered cabinets and depending on the extent of our renovations, architectural choices and styles.

To make a space home, we must first make it feel like their own, whatever that might mean to us personally. We all have different preferences when it comes to architectural or interior design and no two people will create a space which is exactly the same. This is one reason Apropos offers its bespoke design service and what makes any bespoke service so popular.

It’s not always possible to hire in help at every stage of your build or renovation – and if you’re simply remodelling a room, it won’t always be necessary. Finishing touches and added homeliness, therefore, often end up as do it yourself jobs tagged on to the end of your list, but it’s such an important part of making a space feel like yours.

So, we’ve put together some tips on doing just that without needed to consult an interior designer or Feng Shui expert.

  1. Consult the Magazines – It may sound old fashioned, but get your down to your local newsagents and pick up a few interiors magazines. The internet is a great tool for hunting down specific products but right now you’re in the ideas zone. Mood boards and product selections will help you decide what style is right for you and can create a clear picture of how you want the space to look.
  2. Conquer the Paint Charts – Stock up on tester pots and wall paper samples and go wild on those walls. With your chosen style in mind try and stick to shades and patterns within this theme and you’ll make things easier for yourself down the line. Once you have the right choices or combinations you can build the rest of the room around these.
  3. Comb the Internet – Here’s where the world wide web comes into play – rather than trawling the shops for statement pieces and ‘you’ inspired buys get yourself on the internet. In just a few clicks you can narrow things down to your chosen style and travel the world to find the right furniture, in the right colour palette for you. For finishing touches try Etsy or Not On The High Street both of which offer a unique selection of products for the home.

At Apropos we’re experts in making the spaces that you call home but we like to think that we know a thing or two about how to dress them too! However you choose to fill your new or improved spaces we’re happy to have had a part in creating some of them.
