Sympathetic Farmhouse Extension

The Brief

The Brief

The brief here centred very much on creating sympathy between new and old – so that the period character of the farm house was not disturbed. The family needed more light in their north facing home and wanted to capture as much natural sunlight as possible, without detriment to the country aesthetics of their home.

The Process

When working with listed or period properties such as this, sympathy must always be taken into account, it was therefore decided that a flat skylight would be incorporated – giving the family the best of both worlds, a new light filled lower floor to their home, along with a skylight which is hidden from view and thus allows the original character of the property to remain untarnished. Wide pane sliding doors were incorporated to frame aspects of the flourishing garden in all their glory and a simple square shape was used to mimic the host property.

The Result

The result is a striking and light filled interior, within which the family can delight in the natural light which now floods the lower level of their home, or relax beneath of an evening, to watch the stars light up the night sky. With more natural light comes better well-being and a vast array of new ways to use the space, the family now use their glass and aluminium extension comfortable year round.
