Mc’Ap Designs

*Gasp!* What a scurrilous accusation, we thought, when reading through our lovely supporter’s comments on Facebook and discovered that someone, who shall remain nameless, had likened one of our conservatories to a… a… to a McDonald’s!
We must admit - we're not seeing much that compares?

Now, while we’re all partial to the occasional ‘golden arches’ indulgence, when it comes to architectural statements, it’s not really the look we’re going for. Ok, so we admit that a few of the elements are the same; we use a lot of glass and aluminium plays its part in both Apropos and McDonald’s structures, but where’s the Formica? Where’s the laminate and the plastic and the bolts that hold the tables and chairs to the ground in an Apropos design? Where are the clunky doors that have either too much or too little give? We were beginning to feel slightly affronted… As opposed to glass-fronted, which is our usual status! Where in McDonalds, can you find beautiful, original design, rendered in the highest quality materials?

Well, actually, we can probably answer that last one… Have you seen the Maccie’s in Batumi, Georgia? Sitting within the confines of a placid pool, with an elevated floating tail fin, gorgeous glazing and the most aerodynamic architectural design we’ve come across for a long time, this McDonald’s is somewhere between a giant, glazed manta ray and a crashed alien star ship! Isn’t it beautiful?

Yes, this really is a Mcdonalds – perhaps one of the few that’s earned the descriptor ‘restaurant’.

Fast food retailers get a bit of a bad rap, but the Georgian McD’s isn’t the only example of foodie elegance; have you seen this Costa coffee shop in Birmingham? Or this strangely striking Starbucks in Japan?

Costa Coffee create the perfect environment to relax with a Chai Latte.

People have preconceived ideas about what take away culture can deliver, but it’s sometimes a lot more than you might imagine.

All things considered, we probably shouldn’t have minded being compared with McDonald’s; after all, having a Maccie’s concession in your conservatory could seriously help pay the bills and make that sneaky take away all the easier!
