When I’m Cleaning Windows

With his borderline-lewd lyrics and cheeky chappy grin, George Formby gave window cleaning real appeal, but even he would have to admit that the nagging arm ache and irritating streaky finish can get the best of us down from time to time.

Orangeries, conservatories, Aprofold doors and atriums; whichever way you look at it, Apropos products do have a lot of glass on show, which can be daunting to anyonLumi window white top openere not a fan of squeegees. Don’t let that put you off though; all parts of the home need routine maintenance, and with a glass extension you just need to know how best to go about it.

To start with, if streaky, grubby windows are a real bugbear for you, you could always form your Apropos extension from self-cleaning glass. We would always recommend Pilkington Activ Clear for use in the roof panes of any construction – it just makes sense – but it can also make a real difference to the maintenance of taller structures.

Window cleaning aside, being made from polyester powder coated aluminium, Apropos glass structures need far less maintenance than their wooden and UPVC counterparts. While wooden frames will need to be treated annually to prevent rot, and UPVC is prone to weather and material warping, aluminium frames can last indefinitely. To keep them looking their best you need simply wash them down with warm soapy water whenever the grime builds up – nothing natural can ever harm them.

Cosmetics done, the best way to ensure that you and Apropos construction have a long and happy life together is to stick to a programme of regular maintenance – a little and often is a good rule of thumb.

  • Gutters should be kept clear to prevent blockages, unsightly overrun and fire risk.
  • Natural ventilation can help prevent condensation and thus reduce the frequency with which you’ll need to clean internal glass.
  • Always use a soft, clean lint-free cloth or chamois leather when cleaning your glass to prevent any scratches or damage to the coating.
  • Locks, handles and hinges should be lubricated to prevent sticking and any build-up of grime.

By scheduling regular upkeep you will save yourself time and money in the long run and help to ensure that your Apropos glass extension will last as long as you do!
