Apropos: 2013 Northern Design Award Finalists.

Published on 8th November 2013
We’re a little bit happy this week, here at Apropos HQ – we’ve just discovered that we’re finalists in the Best New Build Home Under £500,000 category of the Northern Design Awards!

Apropos: Northern Design Awards Finalist

Although it’s not the winning but the taking part that matters, as good old Mum always says, we can’t help but be thrilled to have made it this far into the proceedings. Our gorgeous little nominee, The Finch Project, has really done us proud and we can’t wait for the ceremony on Friday 22nd November to find out who wins the prestigious award.

The competition is steep, with a beautiful entry from McCann Moore Architects (Hillsborough House), which focuses very much on the modern aesthetic, and an inspirational eco-home from McNulty (Holmes Chapel House), which melds contemporary living with green credentials – we’re particularly impressed by this build’s energy-efficiency and the rain water harvesting system. However, we still think that the Finch Project is a little bit special (and we will continue to do so, no matter who wins!).

A collaboration between Construction Partnership UK and Apropos, the Finch Project is based in Lancashire and takes its muse from the traditional Lancastrian dwelling, with pitched roof and striking dormer windows, while sleek contours, sharp angles, crisp colours and an array of light-bringing Apropos glassware deliver a funky, modern twist. We like to think of it as minimalist heritage chic! It is airy and uplifting, and the combined effect of locational sympathy, modern design and architectural glazing is aspirational; subtlety, elegance and style unite.

Our nomination aside, this year’s Northern Design Awards look set to be a glittering affair. While Sir Terence Conran leads the judging panel, which is populated by a host of industry experts, the other award categories highlight the very best of Great British design and innovation. There are so many inspirational projects to mention that it’s impossible to do everyone justice, but a few nominees have really caught our eye.

In the Residential Landscaping Design category we’ve been completely taken by the Wildlife Friendly Suburban Garden, designed by Karen O’Keeffe; the planting is rich, sumptuous and jewel-like while being thoughtfully tailored to welcome the local fauna, making it exactly the kind of garden suited to an Apropos home. After all, windows really earn their keep when you have something spectacular to look at.

The nominee for the Best Interior Design Practice that most grabbed our attention is Curve Interior Design Ltd. Largely because of their ‘Bathroom with a view’ – it’s visually stunning, but we’re hoping that window employs Switch Glass!

Finally, Reclaimed Geometric Floors, from the Design in Retail Finalists, also tickled our fancy; bespoke is our business and we appreciate a unique job done well.

With 22 award categories, the Northern Design Awards showcase the best of British. We’re nervous and we’re excited, but most of all, we’re honoured to be numbered among the 2013 finalists and wish the best of luck to all nominees.
